As we’ve honored and reflected on Sherryl Lin’s life, some of you have asked what I did while with them… meaning my spiritual or energetic work. Naturally I did the many physical things needed, and these amounted to many long hours each day. I was there to assist and relieve some of the tasks and stress that come at this stage for the family.
However, as those who asked have sensed, it was not the main part of my work there. Since I was young my team has told me that I carry the field of what they referred to as the “witness”. When small, I didn’t question that but as I grew older I did inquire and in each phase of maturation, my understanding of this aspect of my field has expanded as my growth allowed.
Many shaman, gurus, and psychics throughout my life have also spoken to me of this quality of “Witness” that I carry. And also I’ve learned that in some belief systems—Jewish, Buddhist and the Essenes, for instance—they’ve had defined roles referred to as “witness”.
I’ve written about this over the years for my own clarification, often in dialogue with my guides and team. Rather than try to convey all I’ve come to understand about this, I’ll share a summary I made more recently. Cliff Notes, you might call it.
My reason for offering this is to plant the notion in your minds that, while I was born with this field aspect, it is also a way of living. One you’ll recognize in your own lives. It can be stepped into more fully by anyone wishing to entrain their own field with these qualities.
I’ve purposely left it in a rough form—part bullet points, part outline. I think this gives the sense of things without wordy distractions or too much definition. To best understand it however, you may have to set aside a prejudice, as I did, about the many religious connotations of witness and witnessing. The true meaning of this as pure frequency has been lost, distorted or hidden in many cases.

- Witness or witnessing is not something one does. It is something one is. It is an energy frequency, a field frequency. Some are born with this energy in their field and it is a gift of their field. They do not try to be or do this—their field activates and operates in this way. They can be asked to participate in that capacity by someone who recognizes this aspect of their field, or they can attend someone or something, aware that this is what is being called forth. But they cannot manipulate the use and outcome of this energy.
- It is also a way of life. And attributes and aspects of this can be “practiced” as a way that, over lifetimes they become integrated in one’s field, leading to carrying the Witness energy field.
- A witness is one who holds presence without interference. While affirming the reality and sacredness of what is occurring.
* It is to stand in awareness of a moment so fully that it is seen, held, and therefore made more real in the field of consciousness.
* A witness supports a healthy human reality, knowing that nothing is simply there—it is continually and always brought into being through awareness, relationship, and divine attention. So to witness is, in a small but meaningful way, to participate in creation.
* To be witnessed is not to be fixed, helped, or even comforted in the usual sense.
It is:
- To be seen as real, no matter how imperfect or damaged one may be
- To have one’s experience held without being corrected or denied
- To be accompanied by awareness that says, silently:
“You are here. This is real. I am with you in it.”
* Fully present witnessing naturally becomes a profound act of compassion and spiritual service—sometimes even more essential than other actions.
* It is an inner faculty:
- The part of consciousness that can observe without becoming entangled
- The awareness that remains even as thoughts, emotions, or identities change
* It goes beyond inner detachment. It includes relational witnessing:
It doesn’t mean stepping back from life, but standing present within it, without collapsing into reaction.
* A witness is not:
- passive
- detached in a cold way
- or merely observing
* It is someone who:
- confers dignity through presence
- stabilizes reality through attention
- and at times, simply refuses to look away in discomfort or fear
- A simple way to feel it—rather than merely define it is this:
- A witness is not asking: How do I fix this? What should I say?
A witness is resting in: I am here. I am aware. I allow this to be real. I allow this to become what is most truly intended.
This way of being is key to the transformative nature of the Witness energy. Regarding outcome, the energy of witness always midwifes the intent of the Soul.
* “The one who “sees” all of it.”That is almost a pure definition of the Witness—before culture, before theology, before interpretation. It doesn’t mean seeing it all with the journalistic, defining or analyzing mind. It is not XRay vision into the business of others. It means to “see” or be aware but as an expanded comprehension beyond words.
* And importantly, in witnessing you don’t draw yourself outside the scene in rejection of it.
You draw yourself in relationship to it, holding the whole.
* You become an active field of witnessing presence. Not passive observation. Not detached awareness. But a stabilizing, clarifying presence in which reality becomes more visible to itself.
In the deeper sense a true witness:
- Sees without distortion (or with less distortion than most)
- Allows what is to be what it is
- Does not collapse into the experience, but also does not withdraw from it
- Holds a field in which truth becomes more apparent
- And thus allows the best or highest to happen for all involved.
The witness does not change things by doing.
The witness changes things by how reality is held in their presence. Then the highest intent of Soul can override what is there, ease what is there, alter what is there. Change occurs from this place and what occurs does so with Grace.
There are three related but different things that are often confused:
- The Observer
- Watches
- Can be detached
- May not affect what is happening
- The Empath

- Feels with
- Often enters the experience
- Can become entangled
- The Witness (as I am describing it)

- Sees clearly without merging
- Remains present without withdrawing
- Stabilizes the field simply by the energetic gift of Presence
