As often happens when I run my session specials there are people who are saving for a session but didn’t quite make it, etc. I always decide to extend the deadline for them and then in fairness to all, extend for all. Let’s explore the return to Love. When you are committed to Love, as we are, there arises the problem of people we have trouble loving. They may be a former partner who “did you wrong” or they may just be someone who always seems to grate you the wrong way. Either way, this can seem at odds with a commitment to love.
What to do when love doesn’t come easily? Let me share an exercise in love that I tried a number of years ago that worked so well I use it still. While not necessarily easy or comfortable to do, it’s not complicated. And I find it very useful, perhaps you will to.
Pause for a moment and think of the most difficult person in your life, past or present. It might be a former friend, an intimate partner, family member or work associate. It could be a politician, boss, co-worker, neighbor. Choose someone difficult for you tolerate
Feel them very clearly, until you recognize their “tone.” Experience the emotions that linger around you as you feel their presence. Be aware of the fear, anger, revulsion or judgment you may feel for them. Remember them fully, close your eyes and see them clearly, standing or sitting in their surroundings.
Now step into their body. Feel their life, their longings. Feel their stress. Experience their body – is it tense or hurting? Experience their breath. From inside them, understand (not in words and mind) why they are the way they are, get a sense of what they believe, what they truly want, what made them how they are.
Find their hope, their vulnerability. Sense what they care about, how they love. How do they feel about their life? Connect with the child within them. Find their hope, their vulnerability. Sit quietly in their life. Commune with their soul, that loves them. If you are sincere, you can do these things.
Now, in this moment of experiencing them more fully, know that instead of resisting, judging, or hating them, you can, if you choose, love them unconditionally. This takes you beyond the story of them, it does not require you to accept them, it forgive without story of any kind. Explore this option, seeing how it feels to you.
Hold them in the same understanding in which the Divine Source holds them. Let that understanding permeate you, and them. In it, feel your own safety and strength. When you are ready, bless them and wish them well on their journey.
Then ask wisdom about any actions you should take regarding them. Should you spend less time with them, leave them behind? Should you stay with them? Should you be in touch with them? Should you leave them alone? Perhaps you know the answer to these questions, if not, ask now. How should you be, regarding them, what do you need to know? The wisdom to know these things is there for you, you can know.
Briefly write about your experience of this Exercise in Love, note the progression from start to finish, include the wisdom you received about them and the impressions you felt regard future contact or relationship, if that was a question.
Repeating this exercise in unconditional love from time to time, you will find that the unease, ill-will, the anger, revulsion, mental trigger or the fear you hold about them will dissipate. I did this today and it helped a lot. I thought you might like to try it too. There’s such relief in the return to love, isn’t there?
