Dear Flow-meister,
Whether we realize it or not, each human being is a master of flow, as are all elements and creatures of the world. This is easily observed in the movement of birds, the rippling of a brook, the movement of a migrating herd, the life of trees. And in our own lives.
Flow is the rhythm of life at its most open and free. Flow is the natural state of all things. Flow R Us, we could say – it’s that built in.
In fact, it takes quite a bit of energy to stop flow because it’s the primary state of things. We might wonder why we’d even want to. And yet we do block it, quite often, not realizing the 2-fold strain that occurs in trying to stop flow. Flow-stopping not only creates a lot of stress that has consequences to health, it’s also like a leak in our energy body, slowing draining our vitality and reducing our energetic resources.
My friend Pat Webb and I were noodling around in this topic, sharing stories, questions and wisdom as we often do when, unexpectedly, something very fun happened. First let me explain that Pat often receives guidance from guides, angels, fairies and others in the unseen world. I also have incoming from those realms, which means Pat and I have fun, expanding conversations that include those from the inner planes.
One of my favorites among those who come through for Pat is her dear life-partner and husband, David, who crossed over more than ten years ago. He’s a wonderful advisor about the vagaries and practicalities of life. In this moment, he popped into our conversation unexpectedly and began adding to our discussion by listing five things that limit energy, flow, and abundance.
When Pat and I get going like this, I often pull up the iRecorder App on my phone to capture the conversations because they’re usually full of ideas, answers, and inspirations that are meant to be shared. Those in other realms love to get useful and loving messages out to others, and since Pat (see link in PS) and I both do workshops and sessions for others, they like to give us insights and wisdom that can be shared. Like today’s article which includes David’s list of five things that block flow. Isn’t this a fun way to live!!
I transcribed the brief recording, which included the list and brief advice from David that tumbled through as Pat shared his words one afternoon a couple weeks ago. Here’s David’s list – and my thoughts about each point – for you to enjoy as you ponder flow in your life today.
Five things that block, energy, flow and abundance.
- Overthinking – thinking can be very useful, but overthinking blocks flow. When we “go mental” we get in our own way, don’t we? Things then begin to get loopy, circular and confused as we look to the past, roll around in old fears, and project weirdness into the future. Overthinking is a maze that turns ever and ever-endlessly into itself.
- Overdoing – again, taking action – the right action – is necessary, but too often that’s not what our doing is. It’s more like pinging and ponging and bouncing off the walls: Doing! Doing! Doing! Busyness creates the interference energetic of distraction. It causes us to get stuck in linear time, which is a major flow-blocker. And it creates physical tension, leading to:
- Constriction in the body – when stiffening and constricting happen in our bodies we get all knotted up, as you and I well know. The body clenches and this causes the beautiful workings of flow and synchronicity to function inefficiently at best. It then takes a lot more energy to manage anything, thus draining our well-being and vitality.
- The Hopeless Express – What David actually said was “don’t hitch a ride on the Hopeless Express.” I loved that one, the Hopeless Express, hah. Feeling that there’s nothing to be done, that something is beyond our influence, is one of the biggest flow-stoppers there is. It’s a real party-pooper. It’s about the same as saying to the universe, “Don’t bother about flow anymore, it no use anyway.” That’s a good thing to realize when our thoughts or conversations are filled with worry and pessimism and judgment. Those are all sleeping cars on the Hopeless Express, to my way of thinking. And as David said, it’s best not to get on that train.
- Losing touch with the magic – well, all we can say here is amen to that, been there, know what it means. When we lose touch with magic, we lose other things of great value. We usually lose our sense of humor, for example, and joy often goes out the window with it. Gratitude becomes more of an effort. They are all in great abundance within the magic of life. And they are also things that, when practiced, help us stay in touch with the magic. Losing touch with the magic is everything. And flow IS magic – it is the very essence of magic and magic is the essence of flow, they are that intertwined.
After listing these five without elaborating on them, David then offered some very good advice, “Rise above these common thoughts. Less of these,” he suggested, “and a lot more laughter and a lot more smiles! Celebrate! Party!” And Pat said he was showing us having parties and laughing and celebrating small things and having a lot more fun.
As a remedy when flow gets blocked, David’s suggestions are simple and very effective. They can be divided into three things, but they all boil down to one: FUN.
- Rise above common thought, a lot less of that and
- A lot more laughter, a lot more smiles and
- Ceremony and celebration – Party ON!
The fun didn’t stop there for Pat and I. After I wrote the above, I sent it to Pat for approval. She called back to say A-ok and then David chimed in again as we were talking. I pressed record and transcribed those brief comments because they are a perfect addition here.
Pat: “In fact David’s chiming in again right now as we’re talking. He’s saying that the mention of having more parties is more than an idle suggestion and he really wants me to get that because it’s very important. ‘Think of how fun it feels,’ is what he’s saying. ‘The feeling of fun, that life is really fun, that we are here to enjoy ourselves.’ He’s saying, ‘this can’t be stressed enough right now because there is sorrow and grief and letting go and things like that going on at this time. That’s not a problem unless it’s not balanced with the other.’ ”
Isn’t it fabulous that as I was finishing today’s blog, David got to pop in again to emphasize that last point? Wow, talk about things that are fun. He emphasized ceremony, celebration and fun. These can be formal, or as informal as a conversation with a friend. They can be alone, in person, on zoom or the telephone.
No matter how or with whom, it’s time to party, light workers. Party for balance. And for personal growth. An assignment that it can only be fun to keep.
Which of the flow-blockers tend to snag you most often? For me it’s #Overthinking. I’m a writer, and writers are always thinking about things. Which means thinking is a reflex response for me. So I can overthink without even noticing. When flow is not flowing for me, I’ve usually passed beyond useful or entertaining thinking and gone mental.
As you ponder which of the flow-stoppers you most often need to correct by applying your spiritual practice, remember that David takes all the work out of that in suggesting you not focus on the problem at all, but just go straight to rising above that by coming to the party.
Great advice for a flow-meister, don’t you think?
Party on, dear friend, party on! 🎈
