who are youDear You,

He didn’t like what she had done so the man leaned down into the face of the little girl and hollered in a very mean tone, “Who on earth do you think you are?”

She felt a response to the tone and volume of his voice and the message of his body language and words. She felt fear and confusion; she also felt offended. Yet at the same time she thought, “this is a very important question. I will think about it when I am alone.”

Who do you think you are?

She often asked herself versions of this question as she grew older. There were many answers. Depending.

Who do you think you are? It’s a good question to ask. In fact, right now, make a quick list of who you think you are. Start with the things that come up first such as, I am a mother, engineer, wife, healer, spiritual teacher. Move on to the deeper things, including the bad stuff you think you are. Don’t try to make the list a work of good writing, just let it be a fast list, jotted notes. Write as many things as you can in, say, 5-10 minutes.

Now sit, feeling yourself as these things. Experience how they ebb and flow in you, how they make you feel. Are they really who you know yourself to be? Most of the things on the list are probably very changeable. We change, true, but a real sense of self is based on the unchanging. What are you that doesn’t in fact change? Read the following inspired message that came to me in answer to this question. Perhaps it answers the question for you in a more wonderful way.

A Message From the Heart of Love

What is Real?

And what is real, you would ask, dearest friend? What are you born to be, dear one? You are born of nothing less than unimaginable love, you embody a radiant light and you are intended for joy. This is what is real. This is who you are at your core, at your very most real. Unimaginable love, radiant light, and unbounded joy. From this you rise and take your form, to this you do return.

All else is experience and story. It is story, and story bends and glances off many things. Story is reflected trajectories and bouncing projections, incomplete perspectives and dramatic fluctuations. Stories shift and change, they do not stay in one place. Stories can be delightful or they can be difficult, they can be true, they can be lies, or all of these.

Stories can be many things. But there is something they can never be, they cannot be who you are, for they are only momentary and incomplete interpretations of what is partially seen. They are experience, but experience is not who you are.

The truth of who you are is grander than any singular experience or any unfinished, never ending story. The truth is you are love and light and joy come to life in human form for the grand adventure of human life. The truth is that, at your most real, you embrace your humanity each moment but also know yourself to be the glory of unchanging divinity within you.

This is who I am. You are too. Together we are double doses of beautiful light and joy, living a human life with courage as best we can. And it is more than good enough, it’s a very wonderful thing. And that’s a very good thing to know about who we are.

Love from what is most real,
