Dear Sparkle,
You might remember this picture – I think I shared it with you soon after the birth of my first great-grandchild just a few years ago. I share that moment in a brief story in my book, We Are Light! – Experiencing the Truth of Who You Really Are. It’s about the light we have when we first come to Earth
We sometimes call this dark season of the year the “season of Light” because we fill it with beautiful lights in celebration of the coming light. This dear story seemed a fitting comment on this.
The Soul’s Light
I’m harvesting garlic for a friend on a small farm downstream from the bend of a lazy green river when my first great-grandchild decides to arrive one week ahead of my scheduled flight there. Late to the birth, I realize it’s timely because the two first-time grandmothers are hungry to be with their grandchild as much as possible – a pleasure I’ve already experienced numerous times.
Once there, because so many have come to spend time with the newborn and their parents, it’s not until the eve of my departure that space opens to allow me a luxury of time with the little one. That evening, I’m able to take him in my arms after dinner, sitting in the old rocking chair with its comforting squeak. We’re peaceful together and content, hours passing until gradually all others in the household are in bed.
I’m taking a “red-eye” flight to San Francisco after midnight, so sleep is not for a long while yet. Soon the living room is quiet, the dogs snoozing on the couch and the only sound the melodic creaking of the rocker. I hum softly, then begin a whispered song, the song of his coming, the song of the home he’s so recently left behind and of his home here with loving parents and family. I sing of his victories and challenges to come, his gifts and gains, of love and life.
He sleeps on and on as newborns do and we lapse into a deep silence. Such Presence fills him, the sweet Fullness that babies have. It seems we are enfolded in a warm glow and all is well with the world. From dinner to midnight I bask in the subtle glow of this little one, sharing beyond language and word – sharing the wonder of Light so freshly come from Home.

First Light
The first earth Light in each of us is the spark of life – Light as breath – the Light that moves the Soul into form, imbuing it with Presence. You see it clearly in the eyes of a newborn child, you can feel it emanating from their small bodies newly arrived and fresh from the Fullness.
I was like this when I was born, you were too. That Light never leaves us. Not in death, nor at any moment in life. Though in our mind we may feel far from it, it is always there.
Looking deeper, looking true, we catch its glimmers. It begins to illuminate, reflecting Light upwards onto the troubled surface from the calm recesses of our being, from the depths of wisdom and comfort. Go deeper, instinct beckons, fear not, the Light is there. It is what is most real.
We come into form from our life within the Supreme Life that is the Great Dreamer who dreams the Dream of the Cosmos, who dreams the transformation of consciousness into the expanded Light in life and physical form. Within that great life, you and I are souls dreaming our individual dreams within the group dream of human living.

Holding a new-born, we are well aware that she or he is newly arrived from the Light. But perhaps we are not so aware that we are that very same light, that same preciousness and dearness, just as fresh and awesome. We embody that too.
As we enter this season of celebrating the Light, may we each understand this about ourselves. May we each come to know, to actually know this, leaving doubt and unworthiness at last behind. And may we each then allow our self to radiate that same fresh light. We are that dear, that worthy. May we truly experience this. That is my prayer.
When we feel less that this – in the darkness that sometimes overwhelms – let us each say, “Right now I feel overwhelmed by doubts and fears and stories, but these are not the things that matter most to me. My deepest, truest longing is to simply radiate the fresh light I am. Let that be so, and let all else fall away. This is my prayer.”
Doing this, your Light will filter through, overtaking your veiling considerations and mental quagmires. Your intension to serve in this way will compel your Light forward in strength as you remember who you are, and share in this simple way.

Sharing Light with you,
X💜Mayet MaHulili Leilani
