Dear Ones,
When the world feels harsh around the edges there rises – deep in the psyche – a yearning for tenderness. It’s good to let that longing flare, not tamping it down but fanning its embers to flicker higher. It is a call, a message from the soul of you. It is calling you to tenderness.
A yearning for tenderness. Contemplate that for a moment: tenderness. Feel its singular qualities. It encompasses gentleness and implies compassion. It feels warm, benevolent and loving. It carries an aspect of softness and delicacy and certainly it speaks to affection. Sweetness is there as well.
Tenderness feels considerate and kind when you conjure it. It implies safety, reassurance, welcome, invitation. But what sets it apart for me is softheartedness. It is a softened heart that expresses tenderness.
The family photo I share today shows a new father looking so tenderly at his one-week old son, with the child’s first-time grandma looking on in the same way. I include it now for the moment of tenderness that it captures. It’s all expressed in the gaze, isn’t it? The softened mind and heart, the fullness of loving regard, the innocence that communicates through tenderness -it’s all there in the look.
Now, as you consider tenderness, raise your hand to gently stroke the inside of your own arm tenderly. And again. Take your time. You will quickly feel it: tenderness. Tenderness in a touch – oh how the body loves it, how it responds, it purrs, it surrenders, it is able to let go. At last, guard down, tension melting. “Thank you,” your body says, “sometimes I need that from you so much.”
Love Me Tender
I remember my oldest brother playing a song by Elvis Presley called Love Me Tender. At age 7 or 8, I was too young to relate to it as a teenager would to a love song, yet I was drawn anyway – it warmed and moved me. It was the amazing tenderness in his voice, so purely and beautifully expressed. It seemed exquisite and soothing to me and I would beg him to play the 45 record again and again.
Listen to it here, and listen as simply and responsively as I did as a child. Forget the love story, just feel the very real tenderness expressed in his voice. Hear it as a love song from your Higher Self. With such beauty and purity of tone, Presley masterfully captures the real quality of tenderness in his vocal. In it I could – and still can – hear and feel, the world as it is meant to be, as it truly is.
We are so often critical of ourselves and others. It’s part of the harshness of the world that infiltrates the inner reaches of each of us. But tenderness is such an antidote to our rigid necessities, our over-striving and needing and wanting. It is antidote to our fears and worries, our guardedness. Tenderness answers so much and creates such flow – if only we knew its value!
A Tenderness Practice
I’d like to suggest developing a tenderness practice. Discover the power of tenderness. It is every bit the gem and revelation that we know gratitude to be, in many ways even more so.
Speak tenderly and dearly to yourself and others more often. Let your tone and your gaze convey your softened heart. Let your countenance invite and welcome another soul.
Let your tenderness renew your childlike innocence and your hope in the world. See the world through the eyes of your tenderness so love can bloom in your garden. Warmth will bring new life there and winter will loosen its grip of bleakness.
Like gratitude, tenderness is a valued tool of the Soul, an expression of your Highest of Self, a communication with the Inner Beloved. It is a gateway to union with All the Love You Are. Tenderness connects you to the Christed Light within. It is a blessing, a gift, a privilege, a treasure – and it’s an honor to share.
Offer your tenderness to your self and offer it to others in the same way. Enjoy finding new ways to do this. It is more powerful and fun than random of acts of kindness, more profound even than gratitude in it’s ability to change your life and lift others. You will see the miracles wrought by the issuance of tenderness and you will delight in the magic.
With the tenderest of regards,
X💜Mayet Leilani
