Dear Sparkle,

You might remember this picture – I think I shared it with you soon after the birth of my first great-grandchild just a few years ago.  I share that moment in a brief story in my book, We Are Light! – Experiencing the Truth of Who You Really Are.  It’s about the light we have when we first come to Earth

We sometimes call this dark season of the year the “season of Light” because we fill it with beautiful lights in celebration of the coming light.  This dear story seemed a fitting comment on this.

The Soul’s Light

I’m harvesting garlic for a friend on a small farm downstream from the bend of a lazy green river when my first great-grandchild decides to arrive one week ahead of my scheduled flight there.  Late to the birth, I realize it’s timely because the two first-time grandmothers are hungry to be with their grandchild as much as possible – a pleasure I’ve already experienced numerous times. 

Once there, because so many have come to spend time with the newborn and their parents, it’s not until the eve of my departure that space opens to allow me a luxury of time with the little one.  That evening, I’m able to take him in my arms after dinner, sitting in the old rocking chair with its comforting squeak.  We’re peaceful together and content, hours passing until gradually all others in the household are in bed.  (more…)

Dear Thankful One,

A few years ago I did a ceremony and house blessing for a friend moving into her new home.  The ceremony included smudging and song as well as a special prayer I wrote to express the intentions and gratitude for those within.

This Thanksgiving, I thought it would be nice to share this blessing with you – I think it could be a lovely prayer for your Thanksgiving meal.    

You’ll find it below but I also have a pdf copy that’s formatted for printing on an 8×10 sheet of paper.  If you printed it on special paper at home you’d have a lovely 8×10 to frame and hang on the wall like she did, and I have done.  If you’d like to have that, just let me know in a quick email to mahulili@mahulili.com and I’ll email the file to you.

Dear Dances with Angels,

A friend sent me the following text recently.  I riffed on it below, not too much but just enough to get you started with your own riffs and ruminations about emptiness.  And space.

“I am feeling the conceptual power of emptying a closet, and leaving it empty.  So that the closet if full of emptiness.  This concept feels empowering.  Today I will empty a closet and fill it with emptiness, and leave the closet door open, so I can observe emptiness.  The powerful emptiness of space.”
